Want to help the climate crisis? Save money
Everyone always asks: “What can I do to help?” Here’s a deal you can’t refuse
We are just beginning to suffer the consequences of the past 150 years. Our excesses have compounded and are now unavoidable.
No magical machine will clean the air from the billions of tons of CO2 that have accumulated in our oh-so-thin atmosphere. Technological innovations will help, but we have ignored and limited many that would have helped reduce our emissions and waste.
In this disaster, we are all perps and victims.
So, what could we do to slow down these accelerating changes? Reduce our frenetic consumption. It’s that simple, painless, and delivers immediate benefits.
Let’s aim for 10% reductions. For example:
* Is cutting food portions by 10% noticeable? Is cutting advertisement-driven snacking?
– See health and weight loss benefits.
* Reduce speed and drive more smoothly. Share some drives. Use public transportation
sometimes:
– Save on gas and wear and tear on your vehicle.
* Keep clothes longer; use accessories to change style and looks:
– Save money, save time, be creative and fun.
* No need for meat at every meal:
– Watch your cholesterol go down.
* Reduce thermostat settings by 10%
– Watch your energy bills drop.
* Wait another six months before replacing your smartphone or your car:
– The latest model’s bugs will have been fixed.
* Wait one hour before clicking that “purchase now” button!
– You’ll avoid many impulse buys -they add up.
When it comes to prices, “whatever the market (we) can bear” is the base principle. So, let’s reduce our consumption, watch prices drop, and let’s enjoy the savings.
Let’s not hope for all-encompassing and painless reforms that would save our lungs and home planet. Fossil fuels and plastics will not be banned unless we want to live like our great-great- grandparents. Regulations will come, but they will always be behind our needs because of industries’ opposition.
Want to add more positive impact? Let’s reduce our waste. Repair, reuse, recycle. Use marketplaces to sell stuff and make some money.
Want to be more proactive? Talk about your savings actions and enjoy more savings due to collective action. Less global consumption brings prices down and reduces overall emissions.
Less the perp, less the victim, be part of the solution!
